Most beach towns make you pay to park and then fight for a patch of sand. Ocean City, Maryland does neither, and that is most of the appeal. You get miles of free, wide beach, a three-mile boardwalk with a full amusement park on it, some of the best casual seafood on the Mid-Atlantic, and parking you barely have to think about. It is a family beach by day and a genuinely fun town at night.
The beach: wide, free, and never a scrum
Ocean City does not sell beach tags. The entire beachfront, roughly ten miles of it, is free to walk onto, which is not true of much of the New Jersey and Delaware shore. It is also a genuinely wide beach, so even on a hot July Saturday you can find room without staking a claim at dawn.
The surf is the underrated part. Ocean City gets nice, rideable waves, big enough to be fun and gentle enough for kids on a boogie board. It is an ocean beach that actually feels like the ocean.
A three-mile boardwalk with a theme park at the end
The boardwalk runs about three miles north from the Inlet, and unlike most boardwalks it has real amusement parks on it. Trimper's Rides, down at the Inlet end, has been run by the same family since the 1890s and still turns its antique carousel. Further up, Jolly Roger adds a full amusement park with coasters and a water park.
It is the rare boardwalk you can walk all evening without spending a dime, or hand over a paycheck on if the kids spot the rides.
Thrasher's, and a lot more food
You eat Thrasher's French Fries with vinegar and no ketchup, out of a bucket, and you do not argue about it; they have been on the boards for nearly a century. Add Fisher's popcorn and Dumser's ice cream and you have the classic boardwalk run.
Off the boardwalk, Ocean City has a deep bench of restaurants, especially seafood. Crab houses and raw bars are the move, and the town punches well above its size for where to eat.
Parking, the quiet superpower
Here is what locals know: parking in Ocean City is easy and mostly free. Much of town has free street parking, and the big Inlet lot at the south end puts you right at the boardwalk and beach. You are not feeding a meter every two hours or paying a daily beach-lot fee the way you do at a lot of other shore towns.
It changes how the trip feels. You can come and go, duck back to the rental, drive up the beach, without doing parking math all day.
Family by day, party by night
By day it is squarely a family beach: wide sand, boardwalk rides, mini golf, the works. By night the same town turns into one of the livelier scenes on the coast, with boardwalk bars, decks over the water, and live music. Few beaches pull off both this well.
Which one you lean into is mostly a question of where you stay.
Where to stay: the boardwalk vs. north Ocean City
If you want to walk to the amusements and the energy, stay downtown near the boardwalk and the Inlet. If you want oceanfront quiet, look to north Ocean City (the higher street numbers), where the high-rise oceanfront condos line up over a wide beach with far less foot traffic.

Side trip: the wild ponies of Assateague
About twenty minutes south, Assateague Island National Seashore has wild ponies that roam the beach and dunes; it is one of the few places in the country you will share the sand with horses. Keep your distance and never feed or touch them, they bite and kick and it is against the law to approach. It makes a perfect half-day away from the boardwalk.
