July and August are the postcard, but late September might be the island's best-kept secret.

Nantucket runs on a short, intense summer, but the shoulders and even the holidays have their own pull, and far better rates. Here is when to go.

Summer (late June to August)

Peak. Every restaurant is open, the beaches are at their best, and the rates are at their highest. Ferries and rentals book early, so plan well ahead for these weeks.

Fall shoulder (September to October)

The sweet spot, and the locals know it: warm days, thin crowds, softer rates, and an ocean still holding summer's heat into September.

Spring and the Daffodil Festival (late April)

The island wakes up with vintage cars and millions of blooms. It is cool, but charming and uncrowded, and a lovely time to have the place mostly to yourself.

Christmas Stroll (early December)

Festive, cozy, and cheap, with the town dressed for the holidays. Beach time is for walks, not swims. Cross-check our booking calendar and the Nantucket rentals.

The rest of the trip

After the rental, the rest.

A flight in, a rental car for dune drives, a boutique hotel for the last night before the airport. The pieces that complete a coastal week.
